Tony Benn’s eldest son, Stephen, has inherited the title his father disclaimed in 1963 and become the 3rd Viscount Stansgate. Lord Stansgate is director of parliamentary affairs for the Society of Biology and has spent the last two decades in a similar role for the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Labour has four hereditary peers in the Lords and it would require one of those to die and for the new viscount to then seek to win a byelection, competing against other hereditary peers. Under Labour’s House of Lords Act the number of hereditary peers in the chamber is restricted to 92.
His younger brother Hilary is shadow secretary of state for communities and local government. He has two other siblings; Melissa, a journalist, and Joshua, a student of information management.
